The present financial circumstances of this
Colony
are
not such as
to justify any expenditure that can be avoided, but
the occasion was so exceptional that on
hearing of the disaster in Mauritius I requested the senior unofficial member
of
of Council to ascertain the feeling of his unofficial
on the question
colleagues of voting the relief of the sufferers. In the result I learnt from him that the unofficial. members were in favour

Legislative Council, when
